OpenAI releases o3 and o4-mini!
"This Week in AI" is now Superintelligence.

OpenAI releases o3 and o4-mini!
The TLDR
OpenAI has unveiled its most advanced models yet — o3 and o4-mini — which significantly outperform previous versions in math, coding, and visual tasks. These models can now autonomously use all ChatGPT tools, including web search and Python. The o4-mini hits 99.5% accuracy on math benchmarks like AIME 2025. Despite increased power, the models are more cost-efficient and now available to Plus, Pro, and Team users. Also debuting: Codex CLI, a new open-source terminal agent, backed by a $1M grant program. Tool mastery now takes center stage as AGI draws nearer.
OpenAI presented its most powerful thinking models yesterday - o3 and o4-mini outperform their predecessors in almost all areas! For the first time, the new AI systems can combine all ChatGPT tools and use them independently, from web search to Python analysis. Most impressive: In mathematical competitions such as AIME 2025, o4-mini with Python access achieves an accuracy of 99.5% - a practically saturated benchmark. Both models also perform excellently in visual perception and complex programming tasks.

At the same time, operating costs are reduced: the models are not only more intelligent, but also more efficient than their predecessors. They are now available for Plus, Pro and Team users and replace o1 and o3-mini. Particularly exciting: OpenAI is releasing the experimental “Codex CLI” in parallel - an open source terminal agent that maximizes the reasoning capabilities of the models. An accompanying 1 million dollar funding program supports creative projects.

Today we are entering a new era. AI is becoming an essential companion for science. Benchmarks hardly mean anything anymore, tool usage is more important than ever - AGI is just around the corner.

Graph of the Day

Life expectancy has risen massively worldwide over the last few centuries.

We are not going to die!
In his new book Why We Die at the Milan Longevity Summit, Nobel Prize winner Venki Ramakrishnan explains that death is not genetically programmed. Instead, it results from an evolutionary compromise between reproduction and body maintenance. He warns against pseudoscientific “anti-aging” promises and emphasizes that the desire for immortality could impair social dynamics and meaning.
Project Stargate for Longevity
The US government's well-known “Stargate Project” plans to build 10 to 20 AI data centers with a budget of 500 billion dollars. Among other things, these centers will now also analyse complex biological data in order to combat age-related diseases and extend healthy life expectancy. The initiative could revolutionize longevity research and accelerate access to personalized medicine.
AI-supported diagnostics revolutionize cardiovascular health
A research team has developed an AI that uses photoplethysmography data to determine a person's “vascular age”. A significant difference between vascular and chronological age correlates with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality. This non-invasive method could individualize preventive measures and transform healthcare.

1,000 AI Agents Build a Civilization in MinecraftResearchers at California-based startup Altera placed 1,000 AI agents in a Minecraft server, where they organically built a civilization with its own government, culture, and economy. The project shows how AI can simulate complex social systems — all within a virtual sandbox. | OpenAI Debuts GPT-4.1: Smarter Models, Lower CostsOpenAI has released GPT-4.1, a new family of models designed to be more cost-effective than earlier versions. Available in multiple sizes, GPT-4.1 focuses on speed and efficiency rather than extended reasoning. Independent evals show promising results — more in the thread. |
